Oil prices fall as US inventory build-up heightens

Global crude oil prices slid further on Wednesday, following their biggest-ever quarterly and monthly losses, as a bigger-than-expected rise in U.S. inventories and a widening rift within OPEC heightened oversupply fears.

Oil prices are near their lowest since 2002 amid the global coronavirus crisis that has brought a worldwide economic slowdown and slashed oil demand. Crude futures ended the quarter down nearly 70% after record losses in March, Reuters reported.

As of 0345 GMT, Brent crude was down by 47 cents, or 1.8%, at $25.88 a barrel. US West Texas Intermediate crude was up 12 cents, or 0.6%, at $20.6 a barrel, an uptick analysts said was driven by position building at the start of a the new quarter.

US crude inventories rose by 10.5 million barrels last week, far exceeding forecasts for a 4 million barrel build-up, data from industry group the American Petroleum Institute showed.

The bearish mood in the market wasn’t improved by a rift within the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). Saudi Arabia and other members of OPEC were unable to come to an agreement on Tuesday to meet in April to discuss sliding prices.

Oil Declines With More Turbulence Seen After Worst Quarter Ever

Oil dipped back toward $20 a barrel in Asia, kicking off a month which is likely to see demand for the fuel plummet further at a time when the world’s top exporters are pumping more in a damaging battle for market share.

Futures in New York fell 1.4%, after gaining 1.9% on Tuesday. Crude has just had its worst quarter on record, tumbling 66% as the spread of coronavirus crushed demand and Saudi Arabia and Russia embarked on a price war that has flooded the market with supply. Daily consumption could drop by as much as 22 million barrels in April from a year earlier, according to estimates from some of the world’s most influential energy analysts.

Saudi Arabia is following through on its pledge to ramp up oil exports in April, with a first wave of crude already on its way toward Europe and the U.S., according to ship-tracking data. The extra supply is hitting a market that simply has no need for it, as lockdowns suppress activity across Europe and North America, meaning the world will run out of space to store oil by the middle of the year, according to industry consultant IHS Markit.

U.S. crude stockpiles were said to have ballooned by 10.5 million barrels last week, according to traders citing the American Petroleum Institute report, with a 2.93 million-barrel gain in Cushing, Oklahoma, the delivery point of the U.S. crude futures contract. If confirmed by U.S. Energy Information Administration data on Wednesday, the nationwide crude build would be the biggest since February 2017.
